At the projects where our sponsored children attend church and receive the other benefits of sponsorship, there is a monthly “Letter Day.” It’s the day when the “Project Facilitator” brings the letters from the country office, and all the kids are anxious to hear if they have a letter. With all our instant communication—email, text messages, phone calls—it isn’t any big deal when someone contacts us. But to these kids, who aren’t blessed (?) with instant communications, the arrival of letters from the outside world is a really big event! Each child waits as the names are called—eager with anticipation for their chance to go up and get their letter. Imagine the excitement as they get a letter, open it carefully, and savor each word that their sponsor wrote to them!
Recently, I got a small taste of what our sponsored kids experience. It came in the form of a letter from Gemechu Shumbulo, which told of his birthday party and included three photos of the family enjoying the party. In each photo, I could see a picture of me that I had sent to them. It was their way of telling me that I am a part of their family and that they include me in everything they do!
While every letter I receive from my kids is special to me, seeing my picture with them is really precious. It makes me want every child to have a picture of his/her sponsor. To help accomplish that, let me invite you to join in the letter-writing party that will be at First Baptist Church after the 11:00 service on Sunday July 11th. We plan to have a potluck and then have time to take pictures, write letters, and exchange ideas/experiences. I hope to have a flier with additional info available soon. Please come join us. The letters and pictures we send have a huge impact!!
Thanks for making a difference in the lives of impoverished children.
